David Butler on Faith, Doubt, and a Bigger View of God
From Texas roots to world religions, David’s story is about reimagining faith, not as certainty, but as trust big enough to hold the questions.
Faith Over Certainty
For our 100th episode of Case Studies, I sat down with David Butler, teacher, author, and guide for thousands who’ve wrestled with faith. David put words to something I think all of us feel but rarely say out loud:
“The opposite of faith isn’t doubt, it’s certainty.”
That line hit me. Because real faith isn’t about airtight answers, it’s about the courage to live in the tension of the unknown. 🎧 [Listen to the full episode here]
A Bigger View of God
David shared a moment in China that changed everything for him. Surrounded by millions who’d never heard of God, he felt bitter, how could a loving God leave so many out? Then came a quiet impression:
“I will take care of all my children.”
That shifted everything. His faith wasn’t too weak, his view of God was too small.
Faith That Holds Questions
David’s journey shows that doubt isn’t the enemy of faith, false certainty is. True growth comes when we expand our view of who belongs, recognize God’s love working across all cultures and traditions, and hold space for mystery instead of forcing quick answers. That kind of faith doesn’t shrink. It grows.
